Galley Kitchen Remodels: Take A Small Space and Make It Great!

GKGalley kitchens used to be all the rage. Galley kitchens aren’t necessarily small and tight. They are laid out so that everything is within a few steps of the other. In some, it is just a pivot from the sink, to the stove, to the refrigerator. They are designed to save time and energy while working in them.

Years ago, galley kitchens were small and cramped, but functional. The galley kitchens today are large, with lots of counter space. Let’s keep in mind that they are still functional. They have large array of cabinets and drawers for storage and efficiency while also being pleasing to the eye.

If you are working with a small space but dream of an island, think about a portable island that can be brought out when you want to use it and stored away when you don’t. It can offer additional storage and prove to be a real asset to a galley kitchen. If you have a larger galley kitchen, you might be able to make a permanent island. However, keep in mind that you will lose that floor space. Design it well.

If an island is not an option, you might be able to add a peninsula with an overhang counter. This will give you the added counterspace, storage and seating that an island will give you without losing the floor space.

Galley kitchens are notorious for having limited space. With a remodel, look for cabinets that have unique storage features. For example, if you have pets, get a cabinet that hides the pet bowls and food. Pull out drawers for your cabinets allows you to use the full depth of a deep pantry cabinet. Add apothecary drawer separators for added organization.

No matter how big or small your kitchen is, no matter what the layout, there is always a way to design it better. If you are not doing a full remodel or refacing, keep in mind the space, the cabinets, the lighting and floor when choosing your hardware and finishes.
