What You Should Know about Cooker Hoods

When renovating a kitchen, keeping a clean and healthy home should be in the forefront of your design. That is why understanding what type of Cooker Hood to install is important. Cooker Hoods are integral to the smells in your home after cooking, as well as minimizing grease and grime. And no one should ever overlook how the Cooker Hood should complement the design of your kitchen.

There are two types of models to choose from.

  1. The Ducted Extractor is very useful when you’re cooking. Not only will this model minimize grease, but it also extracts all of the air from your kitchen to the outside. In order to install this model, you’ll need to understand installation using ductwork. Because this vent has to be connected to the outside for installation, there are various restrictions for where they can be placed. One huge reason is the ducting not being supplied with the extractor itself.
  2. The Recirculation Model is self-explanatory. It will take the existing air in your home, filter it and blow it back into your kitchen. It also captures grease in a filter, the same as a Ducted Extractor. However, the cooking smells are not transferred outside. It will be filtered through charcoal, leaving the smells in your home. The filter will also have to be replaced regularly.  These models are also usually louder than the Ducted Extractor model, conducting less work in the process.

When making your purchase, you should know the following:

Ducting. Ducting is not often provided. The best way to purchase ducting is through the supplier or by purchasing a DIY kit at a local home hardware store.

Airflow. The best choice for airflow would be an extractor that is 150mm in diameter. You do not want the ridges in flexible ducting restrict your airflow. Also keep in mind where you are placing your extractor. Above or downdraught extractors will determine how you will have to lay your ducting.

Hobs. Be sure that your Cooker Hood is 900mm if your hob is 750mm wide. If your extractor is electric, you should install your Cooker Hood 650mm above the hob. If it is gas, install 750mm above the hob. Also take your ceiling height into consideration. Most models aren’t as adjustable in certain areas of your kitchen.

A Hob can identify to two different categories.

  • Cold. Heat is generated in the pan. This is similar to induction hobs. The best type of Cooker Hood to use that works with a cold hob would be wider in length.
  • Hot. High temperature flame. This is an equivalent to gas hobs.

Every kitchen and home require different needs. Be sure to choose the proper hood for your home. Understand what is needed for installation and that you are able to install it in the correct location in your kitchen. When done correctly, obtaining a Cooker Hood for your home will be one of the most useful purchases you’ve ever made.
